During Summer 2009, LMN Midlands teamed up with LACES (Looked After Children Education Service) to host a series of workshops for 11-17 year olds under Local Authority care across Birmingham, culminating in a performance with professional musicans Moyma & Madflow, a DJ and MC/Beat boxer.
The participants were from various settings - for example, foster homes, residential schools and children's homes - but they all shared an interest in music and are working to gain an Arts Award qualification through participation in the project.
The three-month long project enabled the young people to make, listen and perform live music as well as learn new skills such as team-working, song writing and composing lyrics. These newly acquired skills were showcased to an audience of family and friends at a performance in Birmingham and a DVD was recorded of their performance and achievements.
The project was made possible through funding by Birmingham City Council and The Allan & Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust, for which we are most grateful.
LMN Midlands is involved with the World Musician Recruitment programme - we are keen to extend opportunities for world musicians across the region and welcome partnerships with other organisations in this field.
LMN Midlands plans to increase the level of activity across the region and to develop its work with looked after children, older people and adults with learning disabilities.
