Ian Stoutzker, LMN Founder Chairman, awarded CBE

Saturday 31st December 2011 9:38AM

Live Music Now is delighted to congratulate Ian Stoutzker, Founder Chairman, on the award of a CBE in the New Year's Honours list.

For over 35 years, Ian Stoutzker's leadership of LMN has been a moving force behind the growing recognition of music's positive impact on people's lives, particularly those in need, whilst supporting the burgeoning careers of the best of this country's young musicians. Since 1977, LMN has given over 40,000 workshops and interactive performances to more than 3,000,000 disadvantaged members of society who would have been excluded from the joy and inspiration of participating in live performance.

Ian's particular understanding of the needs of young musicians has helped LMN to offer meaningful support to thousands of performers starting out on their careers. Apart from the musical conservatoires, perhaps no other organisation has played such a widespread and significant role in promoting music as a career and in nurturing the careers of young musicians. Some of the highest achievers in the profession acknowledge their debt to LMN.

A fine violinist who studied the violin at the Royal College of Music with Albert Sammons, Ian Stoutzker later switched to the London School of Economics, which led to a successful career in banking. But music has always been the main focus of his life and he turned quite early on to philanthropic support of the arts, centered primarily on Live Music Now, which he established with his great friend Yehudi Menuhin, in 1977.

Sarah Derbyshire, Executive Director of Live Music Now, said: "In Ian Stoutzker, Live Music Now is fortunate to have a Chairman combining a rare set of qualities: musical talent and insight, commercial expertise, a wide sphere of influence, an understanding of the needs of young musicians and a commitment to enhance the lives of people living in suffering, poverty or under duress. His CBE is richly deserved and we congratulate him warmly."

Notes to Editors:

About Live Music Now

The joy that live music brings in the moment can be transformative over time. LMN delivers programmes tailored to participants whose lives are challenging due to disability, illness, poverty or social disadvantage. Our long term approach, actively engaging participants in music, stimulates responses that can have this profound effect.

LMN selects young professional musicians who combine exceptional performing skills with special qualities of insight, generosity of spirit and flexibility. We enhance their skills through our distinctive approach to training and performance. This approach has been developed during our 34 years of working with young musicians and performing within very diverse communities who rarely experience the joy of live music. Our training helps musicians to understand the needs of different participants and how to structure their performance to create a special bond. Working with LMN gives our musicians the ability to perform with a deeper level of engagement throughout their careers.
