Live Music Now North East is the most recently established branch of the charity. Set up in 2004, it covers Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Co Durham and Tees Valley, and has built up a strong reputation for delivering high quality concerts in a range of community venues. In 2009/10 the branch organised 216 concerts and workshops, reaching approximately 6,500 people. These included projects set up in partnership with many organisations including local authorities, NHS Trusts, school music services, music festivals and other voluntary and community groups.
There are currently 8 North East based musicians on the LMN scheme, all of whom are folk musicians with links to the Folk Music degree at Newcastle University. We are developing training and performance opportunities for these musicians, offering important support at the start of their professional careers.
A key priority for the branch is to work regularly with special schools across the region, delivering a variety of concerts and workshops which offer new experiences to children and young people. The branch also delivers music sessions for older people, including those with dementia, and has a strong partnership with the Tees, Esk and Wear Valley NHS mental health trust.
