SUMMARY:Case History: Justice System
DESCRIPTION:Now in its fourth year, the Music Space/Music Space - Next programme has\n developed from an exploratory project initiated with start-up funding from\n Youth Music, to become integrated into the Youth Justice System in the\n South West, with ambitions to become a long term programme.\n \n \n LMN South West started the program with Taster workshops for young people\n under the wing of community Youth Offending Teams (YOTs), in Juvenile\n secure units and Young Offenders institutes (YOIs).\n \n \n It quickly became clear that trust and continuity lie at the heart of\n successful activity with these vulnerable young people. The programme\n developed elements which gave participants a chance to develop their own\n ideas and build their confidence and trust in themselves and the LMN music\n leaders. We also ran One-to-One sessions giving particularly hard to reach\n young people a chance to work on their own with a musician. The successes\n of this approach led to Music Space - Next.\n \n \n \n This second project, funded by Youth Music, The Arts Council and an\n Anonymous Benefactor is combined with a Youth Justice training programme\n called Training Exchange. This programme trains LMN musicians in Youth\n Justice practices and trains Youth Justice practitioners in running music\n workshops. Newly trained musicians are given a chance to do a day of\n workshops, while being mentored by and experienced musician, in one of the\n 6-part programs.\n \n \n \n The young people involved are in both community and secure situations. They\n have either committed a crime or are at risk of doing so. They are often\n excluded from school and may be very creative individuals. Often it is\n their creativity and lack of interest in the academic world of school that\n has led them to be excluded. They often come from unsupportive homes or are\n in care. Those inside secure units are often there because they are a\n danger to themselves as well as having committed a crime.\n \n \n \n They are an extremely challenging group to work with as they are not quick\n to trust and often want to challenge authority. However, the benefits of\n involvement in live music for such young people are even more dramatic and\n the experience for them can be revelatory:\n \n I was excited. I made my own songs. I made songs. Before I would have just\n walked out of a room where music with guitar, piano. & singing was\n playing. Doing this course has made me listen to understand more. The\n workshops changed my life! Participant X, Atkinson Secure Unit, Exeter.\n \n \n To watch a short film of Participant X's experience on the programme, click\n HERE.\n \n \n \n During the course of the programme, general benefts to young participants\n reported by our partners in the Youth Justice System have included:\n \n \n \n Increased confidence & self esteem\n \n Sense of achievement\n \n Increased concentration skills\n \n Better social skills\n \n Learning to trust adults\n \n Increased self expression\n \n \n \n The emphasis for Music Space - Next is on longer music programming for the\n young people. This leads to a much more significant increase in trust &\n confidence. We are trying to instil a sense of achievement so these young\n people might then have the confidence to try another course of study. We\n want to help them believe in themselves. We also want to be able to\n continue to evaluate and develop this project and the training element\n supports us to that end.\n \n \n \n Music Space - Next is supported by Youth Music and Arts Council England.2008-06-09
