SUMMARY:Case History: Education sector
DESCRIPTION:An innovative, three-way partnership in North Yorkshire has resulted in a\n ground-breaking project using music to bring reading to life for over 2,000\n toddlers.\n \n \n LMN Yorkshire/Lincolnshire worked with North Yorkshire County Council's\n Library and Information Service and NYMAZ (Youth Music Action Zone) to\n deliver Musical Storytimes, providing early years groups with access to\n participatory music activities and to raise the profile of libraries with\n young families.\n \n \n Over 35 libraries were given the opportunity to host a series of live music\n sessions for children aged between 3 and 4 years. Each session was based\n around a book, selected by the LMN artists from a list supplied by the\n library service, and used as a springboard for musical activities. A\n typical session included active listening, music and movement, singing,\n body percussion, simple composition activities using percussion instruments\n and musical games. These activities brought the story to life for the\n children, and many of the library staff and early years practitioners have\n continued to use the activities introduced by the musicians in their own\n storytime sessions.\n \n \n All the LMN musicians involved were given specialist training on working\n with early years groups, and LMN delivered 12 full day training sessions\n for library staff, early years practitioners and parents on how they can\n use and develop their own musical activities with under-fives.\n \n \n Through Musical Storytimes, LMN helped the Early Years Settings involved to\n meet Foundation Stage and Every Child Matters outcomes, and the staff\n training will ensure that this continues.\n \n \n Assessments by library staff, early years workers and LMN musicians at the\n end of the project found that children had benefited through:\n \n \n \n The development of key skills such as listening, reading, identifying\n visual cues, working in a group, co-ordination and creativity.\n \n \n \n An increased confidence and willingness to participate in activities as the\n project developed.\n \n \n \n The Library Service used the project as a tool to reach out to new library\n users through engaging families with young children, and their use of the\n libraries increased as a result. Key issues were addressed relating to\n community cohesion, including literacy support for young mothers and the\n importance of music, story and rhyme in young children's development.\n Future work with the Library Service will support their current initiatives\n including Family Learning Month and the Summer Reading Challenge.\n \n \n The children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and were keen to come again.\n Staff and parents commented on how impressed they were with the sessions\n and what a valuable resource and opportunity was open to the children. In\n three sessions the children grew in confidence, and their skills visibly\n increased. The sessions also stimulated talk about the music, the stories\n and play. A very effective scheme - long may it continue. Staff member, N.\n Yorkshire Library Service\n \n \n Musical Storytimes is supported by: NYMAZ, N.
