Transforming Communities

Musicians in Residence

Our residency programmes are designed to support schools’ existing music provision and can last from half a term to a full academic year. Each residency is unique and sessions are tailored to pupils’ abilities, needs and interests, supporting their agency, engagement and communication skills. We select our most experienced musicians to become Musicians in Residence.

Weekly music sessions in small groups or 1:1 over a sustained period of time give pupils time and space to respond to sound. Over the course of a residency, teachers often report extraordinary and unexpected responses from pupils’ engagement with the musician.

Participating in weekly music sessions not only develops musical skill but also builds pupils’ confidence. School staff tell us how excited children are for musicians’ weekly visits, noting that they will run to the music room when they know that it’s time for the music to begin!

“Having engaged with Live Music Now school residencies over the past 20 years and across three primary and secondary special schools, I can confidently recommend this approach to supporting not only music education, but overall engagement and the development of early communication skills in children with a range of complex needs and learning disabilities.

As a teacher for children with SEND and later as a SEND school leader, I have seen first-hand the positive benefits for both children and young people, and the adults working with them as teachers and teaching assistants. All curriculum additions or interventions come with a cost attached. A Live Music Now School Residency can be funded confidently through Pupil Premium and, in my view, this is an excellent use of the funding stream.”
