The Taff Duo was set-up by husband and wife musicians Lowri Thomas (Viola) and Tom Taffinder (Horn) during the Covid-19 pandemic, as a means to keep performing live music. Supported by the Arts Council, they performed well over 300 online and outdoor concerts into settings such as care homes, hospitals and schools during the various lockdowns. Since the pandemic, the Taff Duo continue to perform in-person and online concerts, delivering a variety of music from pop and rock to classical and operatic arrangements.
Lowri became a full time member of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in 2023, and individually the pair have played with orchestras such as: BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Britten Sinfonia, Heritage Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, and Welsh National Opera.
Tom held the Principal Horn chair on the UK Tour of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and has also performed on the UK Tours of: Billy Elliott, Beauty & The Beast, Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Misérables, Mary Poppins, Miss Saigon, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Sunset Boulevard, The King & I, The Wizard of Oz, Wicked, and 42nd Street.
They have also performed on stage with classical and contemporary singers such as: Marc Almond, Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Paloma Faith, Boy George, Kelly Jones (Stereophonics), Aled Jones, Bryn Terfel, and Robbie Williams.
Lowri and Tom also prioritise music education, and teach in settings such as, specialist music schools, conservatoires and national children and youth ensembles.
