Transforming Communities

Songs and Scones

A partnership developed between LMN Wales and Rhondda Cynon Taf Cultural Services resulted in a monthly series of participatory concerts entitled ‘Songs and Scones’ at the Coliseum in Aberdare which have consistently filled the theatre’s cafe bar and has inspired enthusiastic responses from older residents of the Cynon Valley, many of whom are bussed in from nearby care homes.

During 2011 LMN London used the Songs and Scones model to pilot the first ever free concert at Kings Place, London for older people based in residential homes and day centres in Camden, Islington and neighbouring boroughs.

During the year a total of 4 concerts took place at Kings Place. Feedback we received from those who attended illustrated how valuable this form of social event can be for older isolated people living in the community and how involvement in the music can bring people together and help new friendships develop. Demand continues to grow and we are delighted that during 2012/13 we will be holding similar events in centres across the UK.

“What a truly wonderful day for us all John. I am so pleased that I was able to go to the concert. I was captivated by the beautiful duet from La Boheme. I recall this was the last Opera I attended with my beloved husband.” Service user, Peel Day Centre

“Thank you for inviting us to this afternoon’s event. It was amazing and a privilege to hear the musicians play. Very uplifting and interactive.” Resident at Great Croft Day Centre
