Bio

“Seth Bye & Chris Roberts began writing together in September 2018 drawing inspiration from a vast array of musics, from medieval monks to the Afro-Cuban Bembé. Their unique writing style is quickly establishing the pair as one of the most sought-after folk duos in the West Midlands. Seth is a violinist, composer and educator. He has performed in venues from the Royal Albert Hall to the Cecil Sharpe House and at festivals including Greenman, Kendal Calling and Shambala. He performs in a wide variety of genres, although specialises in folk and traditional music styles. Aside from the duo, Seth works with his innovative folk-fusion quartet Gathering Tides. He has also worked with the Unsung Roots, Germa Adan, The Bonfire Radicals, Joe Broughton’s Conservatoire Folk Ensemble and Isembard’s Wheel. When he is not on stage, Seth works as a freelance educator, aiming to inspire the next generation of young musicians. He teaches violin, creative music making, music technology, and leads workshops across the UK. Chris is a classically-trained guitarist whose performances have been praised for their ‘beautifully varied timbres, […] real virtuosity,’ and for being ‘simply mesmerising’. He graduated from Cardiff University in 2017 with first-class honours and the Neville John String Prize. During his degree, he won the University concerto prize, and became the first soloist to perform with the Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of renowned conductor Andrea Quinn, for almost 10 years. He has recently completed a Masters in performance at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, supported by Help Musicians UK. During his time in Birmingham he was awarded the Postgraduate Pedagogy Prize as well as grants from the Bullock fund and the Loan Fund for Musical Instruments. His debut solo album ‘Adra’ is out now on Ty Cerdd records. He is also co-founder and artistic director of the Cardiff Guitar Festival.”
