Janet Fischer and Nina Swann

Live Music Now, one of the UK’s leading music charities, announces the appointment of Janet Fischer in the newly created role of Chief Executive and Nina Swann as Executive Director. These appointments are part of a wide-ranging and ambitious review involving its beneficiaries and partners to expand the charity’s reach and impact.

Live Music Now transforms lives through music, using interactive music programmes to improve the health and wellbeing of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. Currently the charity reaches 85,000 children and older people annually in over 500 schools, hospitals, care homes and hospices. Their world class training programmes shape the next generation of socially engaged artists and emerging professional musicians. Central to all Live Music Now’s activities is the realisation that those who most need the benefits of live music are those who have least opportunity to experience it.

Janet Fischer is an experienced CEO of cultural organisations and is the Hildegard Behrens Foundation Global Humanitarian Entrepreneur of 2019. She brings to Live Music Now a proven track record in strategic business and cultural change management, fundraising and programme development. Focused on addressing issues of social engagement, cohesion and inclusion, Janet has worked with arts interventions across the UK and the Americas including Fundación Azteca in Mexico, and Sistema de Orquestras de Guatemala. Janet is both an operatic soprano and folk violinist who has performed across North America and Europe, and a highly sought after teacher.

Nina Swann has over twenty years’ experience devising and managing inclusive music programmes at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and the London Symphony Orchestra, and most recently, Live Music Now where she was previously Musicians’ Development Director and Director of the South East branch.

Janet and Nina will work closely with Live Music Now’s Strategic Directors, Karen Irwin and Douglas Noble, and the team of branch directors in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in devising and implementing the strategic plan.

Sir Vernon Ellis, Chair of Live Music Now, commented:

“Live Music Now’s trustees are delighted to welcome Janet to the newly created role of Chief Executive. She impressed all of us with her insight, sector knowledge, energy and passion for our work that will prove invaluable as we increase the charity’s impact to ensure that more people can access live music’s power to change lives. This is a good opportunity to thank Nina for doing such a great job as acting Executive Director throughout the pandemic, ensuring that our freelance musicians have been supported and that our work continues throughout the country despite the challenges posed during these challenging times.”

Janet Fischer commented:

“I am thrilled to be joining Live Music Now at such an important time in its history. LMN has an incredible team, working at the forefront of transformative musical experiences. This has been a difficult period for many and the need for our life changing services is growing across the UK. I’m looking forward to ensuring that as many people as possible have access to our work, whilst ensuring that LMN continues to create deeply meaningful experiences for both our musicians and participants, and is a national voice for change.”
