Live Music Now Cymru is celebrating Volunteers’ Week UK 2026, 1 June to Sunday 7 June, by recognising the incredible contribution of our Volunteer Lullaby Champions, who have taken steps from being participants to advocating and supporting engagement with Live Music Now’s Lullaby intervention.
Through sharing their own experiences, encouraging new parents, and helping families feel welcomed and supported, they are helping to build resilient communities through the power of music and human connection.
Originally developed by Carnegie Hall in New York, Live Music Now’s Lullaby Project pairs professional musicians with mothers, fathers, and caregivers experiencing perinatal mental health challenges or social isolation to co-create, sing, and record a personal lullaby for their baby.
“I describe Lullaby to my friends as like bits of rays of sun coming through the clouds. Like that’s how it felt to me going every week because I was really down and I had so much anxiety. But then through going every week, it sounds really twee but those rays sort of got bigger and it felt like I was coming out of the down through going to Lullaby.”
– Participant, Seven Sisters Lullaby Project 2023
The project creates a safe and supportive environment where families can express themselves creatively, strengthen bonds with their babies, and connect with others experiencing similar challenges. Through personalised music-making, participants often experience increased confidence, improved wellbeing, and a greater sense of belonging.
In Wales, we are fortunate to work with five dedicated Volunteer Lullaby Champions, all of whom began their journeys as participants in the Lullaby Project themselves. Having experienced the project first-hand, these volunteers now play an invaluable role in supporting new families as they begin their own Lullaby journeys.
Volunteer Lullaby Champion Kinsey, who first attended a Lullaby Project in Pyle in 2023, has since become an integral member of the project. Kinsey regularly speaks to families, healthcare professionals, and support workers about the positive impact the Lullaby Project had on her confidence, wellbeing, and relationship with her son. Kinsey also shares and performs her lullaby to families — something she says she would never have imagined doing before participating in the project herself.
“A lot of them [the participants] suffer from anxiety and so getting out is a massive step for them. I feel that having Kinsey has really helped as I think that it makes it relatable for them.”
– Flying Start Nurse, Skewen Lullaby Project 2025
Samantha participated in the Llanrumney Lullaby Project back in 2024. Her passion for supporting other parents led her to speak at Live Music Now’s Unlocking Futures: Music is Medicine in Perinatal Mental Healthcare symposium last year, where she shared her story and advocated for the benefits of the Lullaby Project.
Samantha’s journey is a powerful example of how creative participation can foster resilience, confidence, and community leadership.
This Volunteers’ Week, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our Volunteer Lullaby Champions. Their voices, experiences, and compassion continue to make a lasting difference to families and communities across Wales.
