Transforming Communities
Whilst engaging with the patients, musicians may notice positive or negative reactions to the music which can guide them to adapt and change initial approaches and intentions.

Examples of positive engagement indicators during the music sessions:

  • Smiling
  • Eye contact
  • Open conversations/chats
  • Appreciative movement (e.g. toe tapping)
  • Positive interaction with others (parents, siblings, medical staff etc…)
  • Joining in (e.g. playing instruments, singing)
  • Verbal appreciation (e.g. “that’s lovely”)

Examples of negative indicators:

  • Patients/family members asking you to leave
  • No eye contact
  • Patient physically turning away
  • Verbal distress or aggression
  • Turning attention to something else (e.g. screens)
  • Crying
